Videotape relies on magnetic particles bonded to a thin plastic base. Over time, those materials slowly break down. The magnetic signal weakens. Adhesives deteriorate. Tapes can stretch, warp, or even snap. In humid environments, mold may form inside the cassette.
Even tapes stored carefully lose quality a little each year—often without obvious warning—until playback becomes distorted or impossible.
DVDs and Optical Discs
DVDs were once marketed as permanent storage, but many are now showing their age. Scratches, layer separation, and chemical breakdown—often referred to as “disc rot”—can cause freezing, skipping, or complete failure.
Once this process begins, it cannot be reversed.
